Sizzano

Italian statesman Camillo Benso Count of Cavour described Sizzano’s bouquet “of Burgundian stature” and paired it with Finanziera, a typical Piedmontese chitterlings-based dish. This wine gained D.O.C. status in 1996.

Features

Production area: municipality of Sizzano, province of Novara.

 

Varietals (%): Nebbiolo (locally called Spanna) from 50% to 70%; other varietals such as Vespolina and Uva Rara (a.k.a. Bonarda Novarese) either alone or in blend up from 30% to 50% maximum. Other varietals allowed for cultivation in Piedmont up to 10% maximum.

 

Colour: ruby red with garnet reflections.

 

Nose: fine and pleasant, winy with violet suggestions.

 

Palate: dry, sapid and well-balanced.

 

Ageing: minimum 22 months of which 16 oak according to the designation guidelines. The Riserva version requires a longer ageing time of 34 months of which 24 in oak.

 

Serving temperature: 16°-18°C

 

Best if paired with: roasted and grilled meats, long-seasoned cheeses and fondue.
